Mr. Rajeshwari and Malan B. secured 29 votes out of 44 each to be elected mayor and deputy mayor while their BJP rivals each secured 15 votes.

Mr. Rajeshwari and Malan B. were elected Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Ballari City Municipal Corporation on March 19. The former was elected from Ward 34 and the latter from Ward 37 in the civic body elections held in April 2021.

Elections for the positions of mayor and deputy mayor had been postponed several times before being held on March 19 in the presence of the regional commissioner (Kalaburagi) Dr NV Prasad.

Of the 44 members of the chamber, 39 elected members and five ex-officio members (two parliamentarians, two deputies and one MLC), Rajeshwari and Malan obtained the votes of 29 members. Surekhagouda and Mr. Govindarajalu, the BJP members who contested for the positions of mayor and deputy mayor, won 15 votes each.

Mr. Prasad gave all candidates two minutes to withdraw their nomination papers. As none withdrew, he decided to go ahead with the ballot and announced the results shortly after the end of the vote, in the presence of Deputy Commissioner Pavan Kumar Malapati and Corporation Commissioner Preeti Gehlot .

The Congress had won in 21 out of 39 wards while the BJP had won 13 in the civic body elections in April 2021. Independent candidates, who were basically members of Congress and contested the elections as independent candidates after being denied a ticket by their party ticket, had won in five wards.

Congress leaders had consistently alleged that the BJP repeatedly postponed municipal elections under various pretexts to prevent the party from gaining power in the civic body after winning a clear majority. Some leaders had even alleged that BJP leaders were trying to reach out to members of Congress with lucrative deals and persuade them to break from the party and join the BJP. To avoid the possibility of “poaching” of its members by the BJP ahead of the municipal elections, the Congress had herded its elected members to a seaside resort on the outskirts of Bangalore on March 16. The members were brought back to Ballari on the evening of March 18. vote in municipal elections.
