Ludhiana, July 20

It was a narrow escape for a tailor after a dilapidated part of the municipality building collapsed and debris fell onto the road after rain on Wednesday. The old building, in which some civil servants work, is located on Clock Tower Chowk to Lakkar Pull Road, a busy stretch. The MC’s night shelter is also located in the building.

Debris fell on a roadside tailor’s sewing machine outside shops, damaging the table and the machine as the tailor narrowly escaped.

The tailor walked away when he noticed a few small pieces of the dilapidated part falling off. Soon after, a dilapidated part of the building collapsed, damaging her table and sewing machine.

In June, the MC issued notices to owners of unsafe buildings in the city and ordered them to have their unsafe buildings or parts demolished or repaired within a given time frame. The MC had prepared a list of 135 dangerous buildings in the four areas of the city. However, the civic body did not pay attention to its own building.

MC Area Commissioner in Area A Neeraj Jain said part of the hangar in the building had broken down and they were looking into the matter.

Superintendent Engineer (B&R) Tirath Bansal said necessary measures would be taken to repair the damaged part.
