Earlier in the day, the Scarborough Health Network and University of Toronto Scarborough confirmed they were receiving a record donation. The two jointly received a $75 million gift from the Orlando Society, the largest private industrial real estate developer and owner in Canada. Orlando’s donation is the largest in SHN history and one that will transform both SHN and U of T Scarborough.
“Every resident of Scarborough and East GTA deserves to lead healthy lives and have access to excellent health care whenever they need it,” said Blair Wolk, President of Orlando Corporation . “The Scarborough Health Network and the University of Toronto are two institutions that can help make this goal a reality and we are happy to be able to support them.
Of the $75 million donation, $50 million will go to SHN – in part to support upcoming new facilities at Birchmount Hospital, including the addition of 14 new operating rooms and over 200 new beds .
“We are extremely grateful to Orlando Corporation for hearing the message from our Love, Scarborough campaign and invest in equitable health care for our diverse community,” said SHN Foundation President and CEO Alicia Vandermeer. “Their donation will support the redevelopment of Birchmount Hospital, including the expansion and innovation of the emergency department, network-wide mental health care and other urgent needs, allowing us to provide more care with fewer obstacles.
The remaining $25 million was donated to the University of Toronto Scarborough. These funds will be used to construct a five-story building on campus with state-of-the-art facilities for the school’s health education programs.
“On behalf of the University of Toronto, I would like to express our deepest gratitude to the Orlando Corporation for this exceptional act of philanthropy,” said Meric Gertler, President of the University of Toronto. “Your leadership will make a major difference in the lives of the people and communities of Scarborough and the GTA East, strengthening health care and improving the quality of life for generations to come.
Donations received by SHN and U of T Scarborough are part of the Love, Scarborough fundraising campaign, which aims to strengthen health care and medical education in Scarborough.
