Shelves of Kozhikode Corporation plans to set up more modular toilets

The Kozhikode Corporation shelved plans to install modular toilets in the city in place of electronic toilets, after the two modular units in the Corporation’s office premises reportedly developed problems.

It was in December 2021 that the Company decided to replace electronic toilets with modular toilets on an experimental basis. The units were intended for people with disabilities and the elderly. Recently, the Corporation’s engineers reported problems in the units. They pointed out that the modular toilets could not be used in the event of rain.

“Now we plan to install more normal toilets throughout the city,” said S. Jayasree, chairman of the company’s standing health committee. On the other hand, many of these toilets built on the “take a break” model in the city remain abandoned because few agencies have come forward to manage them.

“We tried to get the Kudumbashree to handle them, but there were technical issues. We have also contacted ‘Sulabh’ for this purpose,” Ms Jayasree said, adding that the company does not have the resources to directly manage the toilets.

Meanwhile, it is planned to open bathroom and toilet complexes in the city’s crematoriums. They will also serve as public toilets, Ms Jayasree said.
