NEW WILMINGTON, PA – Many college students have a lot on their plate: balancing sport, balancing music, balancing just being away from home. However, imagine balancing your own business at 21 while being a full-time student.
Alex Mullen ’23, major in business administration and marketing and minor in entrepreneurship and human resources. Wow, that was a lot to say. Mullen balanced two majors and two minors while studying here in Westminster and developed his car detailing business called AM Auto Detailing.
“I started detailing cars when I was 14 years old. I started making them in my neighborhood.” Mullen added, “I have continually reinvested in this and now have a fully mobile retail business serving the Pittsburgh and New Castle area while I am in school.”
Without a doubt, Mullen extended AM Auto Detailing after simply doing his local area in Pittsburgh.
“I’ve had the chance to work with some really great people around Pittsburgh. Steelers players, business owners and car collectors. It’s been a great experience for me.”
Some notable clients Mullen has worked with are the Steelers wide receivers Juju Smith-Schuster and Chase Claypool. Plus, Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick. Mullen also worked with Jared Zych, owner of NOLAC Inc., located in South Side, Pittsburgh.
“They’ve all influenced me, and it’s an honor to be able to work with them.”
Mullen also built AM Auto Detailing through social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok. While posting on all three platforms daily, Mullen also attracted clients through word of mouth and simply delivering a job well done.
Additionally, Mullen manufactures its retail clothing, selling t-shirts, sweatshirts and long-sleeved shirts on its AM Auto Detailing website. These clothes have been her main focus for the time being; However, he said he was ready to make more clothes in the future.
Mullen faced many challenges trying to balance both school and AM Auto Detailing.
“I really tried to focus my efforts on bringing my customers to New Castle to limit my trips to Pittsburgh. Occasionally I will make the trip back to Pittsburgh on weekends, but I mainly tried to expand my business here. “
To add, Mullen is an excellent student while achieving a GPA of 3.7 while having two majors and two minors. It’s safe to say. Mullen takes academics and his business seriously.
“It can be very difficult to deal with burnout. I tire a lot. Yet I try to combat this by scheduling time for myself and adjusting a work schedule to get results. “
Mullen also spoke about what he hopes to gain from the experience.
“I just hope to meet and learn from everyone I work with and still have something of my own that I can always do. I want someone to be remembered who really cared about everyone and everything. , which I was a part of. As well as being seen as someone who was able to do something he loved in his own way. “
Mullen impressed me and how he balanced everything on his plate while being a full time student. I hope he impressed you too.
