Ted Smyth honored by the Irish Business Organization of New York


Ted Smyth, a former diplomat and business executive, is a leader in the Irish-American community through his writing, his tenure on the boards of key Irish organizations, and his support for the IBO’s mission and d ‘other organizations.

The award annually celebrates those individuals who embody the values ​​of three-term IBO President Sean McNeill: his extraordinary generosity, his commitment to the community, and his support for the IBO’s ethics “Network, Communication, Reciprocity “.

“Each year the IBO Board of Directors reviews an impressive list of Sean McNeill award possibilities, but for 2021 Ted Smyth was the perfect choice,” said IBO President John Lee.

“After his distinguished diplomatic and professional career, Ted applied his talents to supporting key Irish and Irish-American initiatives. He was a regular contributor to our many IBO events, an exceptional speaker for us and a valuable sounding board for me personally.

Growing up in rural County Westmeath, Smyth received a BA in History and Political Science from Trinity College Dublin. He was an Irish diplomat from 1972 to 1988 in Portugal, Geneva, the United States and the United Kingdom during a career marked by his work on the peace process in Northern Ireland.

After moving to the United States, he became a senior executive at two Fortune 200 companies and held several board positions.

Smyth is now Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Clinton Institute at University College Dublin and Chairman of the Advisory Board of Glucksman Ireland House at NYU, where he also earned a Masters in Irish Studies.
